The root canal procedure is a common dental treatment

The root canal procedure is a common dental treatment used to save a severely infected or damaged tooth. Instead of removing the tooth, root canal therapy eliminates the infected pulp inside the tooth, disinfects the root canals, and seals them to prevent future infection. Modern root canal treatment is highly effective and is performed using advanced dental techniques that help minimize discomfort while preserving the natural tooth.

The first step in the root canal procedure is a comprehensive dental examination. The dentist carefully evaluates the affected tooth, reviews the patient's symptoms, and takes digital X-rays or three-dimensional imaging to determine the extent of the 杜牙根過程 infection. Common signs that may indicate the need for root canal treatment include persistent toothache, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold foods, swelling around the gums, pain while chewing, or the appearance of a dental abscess. Accurate diagnosis allows the dentist to develop the most appropriate treatment plan.

Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the dentist begins the procedure by administering local anesthesia to numb the affected tooth and surrounding tissues. This ensures that the patient remains comfortable throughout the treatment. A protective rubber dam is then placed around the tooth to keep the treatment area clean, dry, and free from saliva during the procedure.

The next stage involves creating a small opening in the top of the tooth to access the infected dental pulp. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that help the tooth develop during its early stages. When bacteria enter the pulp through deep decay, cracks, or trauma, infection can occur and cause significant pain. Using specialized dental instruments, the dentist carefully removes the infected or damaged pulp from inside the tooth and its root canals.

After the infected tissue has been removed, the dentist thoroughly cleans and disinfects the root canals. Tiny instruments are used to shape the canals while antibacterial solutions flush away bacteria, tissue debris, and contaminants. Proper cleaning is one of the most important steps in the root canal procedure because it significantly reduces the risk of recurring infection and promotes long-term treatment success.

Once the canals have been completely cleaned and dried, they are filled and sealed using a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. This material fills the empty canal space and prevents bacteria from re-entering the tooth. A temporary or permanent filling is then placed to seal the opening created during the procedure.

In many cases, especially when a tooth has lost a significant amount of its natural structure, the dentist recommends placing a dental crown after root canal treatment. A custom-made crown strengthens the treated tooth, restores its normal appearance, and protects it from fracture during daily chewing. The crown is designed to match the color and shape of the surrounding teeth, providing both durability and a natural-looking result.
