IPL 2026: Five Possible Overseas Replacement Players for CSK After Nathan Ellis’ Injury

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have faced an eleventh-hour crisis ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Australian pacer Nathan Ellis, who was earmarked as the team’s primary death-over specialist, has been ruled out of the entire tournament due to a hamstring injury sustained during a training session.

With Matheesha Pathirana now playing for KKR, the loss of Ellis leaves a massive void in the "Yellow Army's" bowling department. Diamond Exchange 99 CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has confirmed that the franchise is actively scouting for a replacement.

Here are five overseas fast bowlers who could step in to save the day for Ruturaj Gaikwad’s men:

1. Gerald Coetzee (South Africa)

The "Karoo Express" was one of the most surprising names to go unsold in the IPL 2026 mini-auction. Known for his raw pace and aggressive mindset, Coetzee brings the kind of X-factor CSK often lacks in their seam department.

  • Why he fits: He has the ability to bowl at 145kph+ and possesses a mean bouncer. While he isn't a traditional "slow-ball" specialist like Ellis, his pace can ruffle feathers even on the sluggish Chepauk tracks.

2. Spencer Johnson (Australia)

If CSK wants a like-for-like replacement in terms of nationality and tactical utility, look no further than Spencer Johnson. The left-arm pacer has been a revelation in the Big Bash League and has prior IPL experience with Gujarat Titans.

  • Why he fits: Being a left-armer, he offers a different angle to the attack alongside Khaleel Ahmed. His high-arm action and ability to hit the deck hard make him a dangerous prospect in the powerplay and at the death.

3. Jhye Richardson (Australia)

Another Australian who went unsold, Richardson is a highly skilled operator when fit. He has a variety of slower balls and a very accurate yorker—traits that align perfectly with the "CSK way" of bowling at the death.

  • Why he fits: Richardson is a smart bowler who relies on subtle changes in pace. On a pitch like Chennai, where the ball often stops and grips, his cutters could be just as effective as Nathan Ellis' variations.

4. Fazalhaq Farooqi (Afghanistan)

With Noor Ahmad already in the squad, CSK could look to double down on the Afghan connection. Farooqi has been one of the most consistent performers in global T20 leagues and the T20 World Cup 2026.

  • Why he fits: Farooqi is a master of the swinging new ball but has significantly improved his death bowling. His ability to execute wide yorkers and slower-ball bouncers makes him a versatile replacement for any phase of the game.

5. Taskin Ahmed (Bangladesh)

Taskin Ahmed has been in the form of his life recently. While he has previously missed out on IPL opportunities due to national commitments, the 2026 window might finally see the "Dhaka Speedster" in yellow.

  • Why he fits: Taskin has developed a brilliant "back-of-the-hand" slower ball, which is a prerequisite for any CSK death bowler. He is taller than Ellis and generates more bounce, which could provide a new dimension to the CSK pace battery.

The Verdict: Who Should CSK Pick?

While Gerald Coetzee offers the highest ceiling in terms of pure impact, the CSK management—led by MS Dhoni’s tactical influence—often prefers bowlers with high "cricketing IQ" and variations.

Jhye Richardson or Spencer Johnson seem like the most logical choices to maintain the balance of the squad. However, don't be surprised if CSK pulls a rabbit out of the hat with a "mystery" pick that suits the unique conditions of the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
