Comprehensive guide to installing these powerful fixtures

Upgrading to UFO LED high bay lights or commercial electric led flood light is one of the most effective ways to improve a workspace, but proper installation is crucial for both performance and safety. While hiring a licensed electrician is always recommended for complex jobs, understanding the process helps facility managers and confident DIYers ensure the job is done right. Here is a comprehensive guide to installing these powerful fixtures.

Pre-Installation and Safety First

Before climbing a ladder, safety must be the top priority. Electricity is unforgiving; according to the National Electrical Code (NEC), you must always work on a dead circuit. Turn off the power at the breaker box, and do not rely on the light switch alone. Use a non-contact voltage tester at the fixture location to confirm the power is off .

Next, verify your mounting surface. Standard ceiling electrical boxes are often rated for only a few pounds, but UFO high bays can weigh 8-15 lbs. The independent anchor strategy is the safest approach: secure the main mounting hook directly into a ceiling joist or structural beam, independent of the electrical box . Most fixtures also come with a safety cable—anchor this to a separate point as a backup to catch the light if the primary hook fails .

Mounting and Wiring

The most common installation method is the hook mount. Start by threading the provided I-hook into the threaded hole on top of the fixture and tightening the set screw to secure it . If your fixture has adjustable wattage or color temperature, now is the time to pop off the rubber grommet and set those dip switches before the light is hoisted into the air .

For wiring, you generally have two options. The easiest is the plug-and-play method: if you have a ceiling-mounted outlet, simply hang the fixture and plug it in . For hardwiring:

  1. Connect the wires: Match the fixture wires to your supply lines—Black (Live) to Black, White (Neutral) to White, and Green or Bare (Ground) to Ground—using UL-listed wire nuts .

  2. Handle dimming wires: If you see purple and gray (or pink) wires, these are for 0-10V dimming. If not using a dimmer, cap them individually. Never connect them to power lines .

  3. Finalize: Once wired, lift the fixture and hook it onto the pre-mounted hook. Tuck any excess wires neatly into the junction box .

Final Checks and Optimization

After mounting, restore power and test the light. To maximize your investment, consider the lighting layout. For example, in a standard two-car garage, installing two 150W fixtures (one over each bay) provides more uniform light and reduces shadows compared to a single, more powerful unit in the center . Regular maintenance, such as occasionally wiping dust off the housing, ensures optimal performance and heat dissipation for years to come .
