The History of Tortilla — Where Did It Come From?

Okay so tortilla is everywhere now. You see it in wraps, tacos, burritos, quesadillas — basically in every fast food place and every kitchen. But have you ever stopped and thought — where did this thing actually come from? Who made it first? How did a simple flat bread become so popular all over the world?

The history of tortilla is actually really interesting. And it goes back a very very long time.

It All Started in Mexico — Thousands of Years Ago

The tortilla is originally from Mexico. And when I say old, I mean really old. Historians believe that tortillas have been eaten in Mexico for around 10,000 years. That is not a typo. Ten thousand years.

The people who made it first were the indigenous people of Mesoamerica — places that are now Mexico and Central America. Groups like the Aztecs and the Maya were eating tortillas long before anyone else in the world had ever heard of them.

Back then there was no fancy equipment, no machines, no supermarkets. People made tortillas completely by hand using one simple ingredient — corn.

Corn Was Everything

To understand tortilla, you have to understand how important corn was to these ancient civilizations. Corn was not just food. It was life. It was culture. It was religion. The Aztecs and Maya believed that humans were literally created from corn. That is how central it was to their entire world.

So it makes complete sense that their most important food — the tortilla — was also made from corn.

How They Made It Back Then

The process they used is called nixtamalization. It sounds complicated but the idea is simple. They would soak dried corn in water mixed with lime — not the fruit, but a mineral called calcium hydroxide. This soaking process made the corn softer, easier to digest, and much more nutritious.

After soaking, they would grind the corn into a thick dough called masa. Then they would take small balls of masa, flatten them by hand into thin round shapes, and cook them on a flat clay surface over fire.

That flat cooked corn disc — that was the original tortilla.

What is amazing is that people still make corn tortillas using basically the same process today. Thousands of years later and the method has not changed that much.

Where did the name come from?

The word tortilla is actually Spanish. It means little cake or little round thing. When Spanish explorers came to Mexico in the 1500s, they saw the indigenous people eating these flat corn rounds and they gave it that name.

The indigenous people had their own names for it. The Aztecs called it tlaxcalli. But over time as Spanish became the main language of the region, the word tortilla stuck and that is what the whole world knows it as today.

The Spanish Arrival Changed Things

When Spanish colonizers came to Mexico in the early 1500s, they brought wheat with them. Wheat was something the indigenous people of Mexico had never seen before. Over time, people started experimenting and making tortillas with wheat flour instead of corn.

This is how the flour tortilla was born. Flour tortillas became especially popular in the northern parts of Mexico where wheat grew better than corn. They were softer, more flexible, and easier to roll — which made them perfect for wraps and burritos.

So now there were two types. Corn tortilla — the original ancient one. And flour tortilla — the newer one that came after the Spanish arrived.

Both became important parts of Mexican food culture.

Tortilla Spreads to the United States

As Mexican people moved into what is now the southwestern United States — places like Texas, California, New Mexico, and Arizona — they brought their food with them. Tortillas started becoming popular in these areas too.

For a long time tortillas were mostly eaten by Mexican and Mexican American communities. But slowly, through the 20th century, more and more Americans started eating Mexican food. Tacos became popular. Then burritos. Then quesadillas. And with all that came the tortilla.

By the 1980s and 1990s tortillas were being sold in supermarkets all across America. By the 2000s they were everywhere in the world.

The Tortilla Industry Today

Today tortilla is one of the most consumed breads in the entire world. In the United States alone, tortillas are a multibillion dollar industry. They actually outsell hot dog and hamburger buns now — which honestly says a lot about how popular they have become.

Tortillas are now eaten in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and basically everywhere. You can find them in almost every country. What started as a hand made corn flatbread in ancient Mexico has become a global food that billions of people eat every single week.

Why Tortilla Survived So Long

Think about it — 10,000 years is an incredibly long time for any food to survive. Most things change completely or disappear. But tortilla is still here and it is more popular than ever. Why?

Because it is simple. It only needs a few ingredients. It is easy to make. It goes with almost any kind of food. It is filling and affordable. And most importantly — it tastes good.

Simple food that works well always survives. And tortilla is the perfect example of that.

From ancient corn fields in Mexico to kitchens and restaurants all around the world — the tortilla has traveled a really long journey. It is not just food. It is history in your hands every time you pick one up.

Pretty cool for something that looks so simple.
